John's (from Big Fresh) dad played in a band with R. Stevie Moore so he is a friend of the family, but never was R. Stevie Moore's son in Big Fresh. I don't even know if he HAS a son. Just trying to keep it straight. Peace!

In reply to <a href="https://www.obscuresound.com/2009/06/parental-guidance-for-big-fresh/#comment-253090">RockrBoy2012</a>.

the one-sheet I received stated that he was, so I apologize for any outdated information that may have derived from that. I do not feel that it detracts from the point presented though...

the video in the post shows Moore's involvement with the group and this is the main point of the article. the differences between Buckley and Kuti show that musical talent is found too often on a case-by-case basis to assume whether it is hereditary or not, but it also shows that musicians tend to impact the lives of the people they influence, whether they are related to them or not. Moore impacted the lives of his son and his friends by helping out the band as early as '99. his son is not in the band any more, but that does not make this irrelevant. the basis of this article is how upbringing and experience are more vital than simply having musical genes.

I was using the analogy of passed down genetics to show that one does not need to have music in their genealogy to be great. instead, I was focusing on how one's lifestyle and generously talented collaborators (Moore in Big Fresh's case) are the real deciding factors. I apologize if this wasn't clear, as I can understand how his son's non-placement in the band can make an article like this seem somewhat irrelevant. the focus here, though, was how musicians like Moore effect the musical upbringing of his son and his friends, ultimately making the genealogy aspect irrelevant.

Also, Jeff Buckleys mother, Mary Guibert, is a classically trained musician. From an interview with Jeffs friend and photographer Merri Cyr I learned that almost daily Mary would encourage the young Scottie (as he was then known by his middle name), to sing along as she played the piano, and that there was alway a guitar lying around that he was encouraged to pick up. So, your point on him seem rather redundant too.

Rufus of course, was brought up in a musical family too, having group singing, learning harmonies and such, from a young age. Again, being taught the language of music.

R. Stevie Moore's son is NOT in this band. A friend of his is, so your whole point about genetically passed down musicality is defunct.
