Mister Heavenly – Bronx Sniper

Every time news about Mister Heavenly surfaces, I just get more and more excited. In this modern age of indie collaborations and “super groups”, it’s refreshing to see one project that works to all the members’ strengths instead of trying something radically new (see: Shearwater and Xiu Xiu combining for Blue Water White Death). Each new track from Nick Thorburn (of Islands and The Unicorns), Honus Honus (of Man Man), and Joe Plummer (of Modest Mouse and The Shins) has been as exciting as the last. Their newest single, “Bronx Sniper”, is no exception; it seamlessly weaves varying styles into one unique experience that is just plain awesome. BUY

Blitzen Trapper – American Goldwing

I was not impressed with 2010’s Destroyer of the Void. Blitzen Trapper’s 2008 LP, Furr, spoiled me on the band’s strongest material. Their subsequent work hasn’t sounded up to par with songs like “Furr”, “Black River Killer” and “Gold for Bread.” And while the their newest single, “American Goldwing”, isn’t as energetic as some of Furr’s best moments, it definitely marks a shift back into that vein and away from Destroyer of the Void’s so-somber-it’s-boring affliction. Thankfully, Eric Earley takes it easy on the harmonica, using it as support instead of the song’s backbone. BUY

Cymbals Eat Guitars – Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name)

Sticking to what they know best, Cymbals Eat Guitars comes out swinging with a dense, long track to mark the announcement of their sophomore record, Lenses Alien. While “Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name)” definitely marks a growth in the band’s use of distortion and ambiance, it’s fitting that the song’s title utilizes the ‘(Proper Name)’ label that they did with “Wind Phoenix (Proper Name)” on Why There Are Mountains; the same grandiose bravado can be heard throughout the track’s eight-plus minutes, along with multiple movements and a more stylized approach to melody. Real Estate, among a plethora of other artists and bands, fell through the cracks of my music collection when they debuted a few years ago. With the chillwave/lo-fi movement in full swing, it was hard to discern the gems from the rocks in the sea of new artists. Many of those outfits from two years ago faded away into the ether of the blogosphere. Fortunately, I get a second chance to give Real Estate the attention they deserve. Their new album Days, due out on September 27th, appears poised to help with that. This track isn’t much different than the band’s previous material, but who’s to say that’s a bad thing? BUY
Really digging the Mister Heavenly track – I will be looking for more by them. The sound is mellow with an edge and I find that more and more indie groups are working toward maintaining that raw sound that is indigenous to indie music.
I wish I had time to go through all of these right now! Unfortunately I don’t, but I am bookmarking your page so that I can come back and have a listen! At first, I thought that the guy in the middle of the Mister Heavenly photo was Julian Casablancas, and I was psyched lol, then I heard them and was still psyched. They’re aweeeesuuuuuum
