MP3: I Used To Be A Sparrow – Mikkael

Under-exposed duo I Used To Be A Sparrow consist of two members with varying stylistic preferences and home countries. Dick Pettersson is a Swede who plays with acclaimed alt-rockers In These Woods, while Andrea Caccese is an Italian-born songwriter who plays with the more garage-leaning Songs For The Sleepwalkers. They formed this past December and will release their debut album, Luke, on March 14th through Paper Wings Records.

Together, they create highly melodic indie-pop with warmly optimistic lyrics. It’s evidenced by their debut single “Life Is Good”, which premiered earlier this month on MTV New Generation. It’s a chirpy track bound for summer days, with the strongest comparison being to Magenta Skycode. Nothing entirely complex, but it’s a great introduction. “Oh, life is good today,” Pettersson sings, as if he’s taking in a breath of fresh air. Repeating the band’s name – “I used to be a sparrow” – during the chorus helps us remember it, though with quality tracks like this one and accompanying b-side “Mikkael” I doubt the repetition is necessary. It really hits the sweet spot for fans of Magenta Skycode, Lo-Fi-Fnk, and Håkan Hellström.
