Of Montreal dropped the music video for “Spiteful Intervention”, which makes viewers feel as if they dropped some acid. Here, we see frontman Kevin Barnes, but not before a pulsating blob of autumnal colors sketches his likeness. Toward the end we see what looks like a dragon, sort of with the distorted mouth of Munch’s ‘The Scream’. I don’t know what I’m looking at exactly, but I don’t think I’m supposed to. What does your mind allow you to see? Along a track like “Spiteful Intervention”, let it take you anywhere.
The track is off Paralytic Stalks, which was released on February 7th. Polyvinyl said that Paralytics Stalks contains “an infinitely more personal nature than anything Kevin Barnes has written since 2007?s Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?“, considered one of the band’s best albums. It’s useless attempting to singularly describe the direction of a Kevin Barnes release, but Polyvinyl does a commendable job of mixing and matching: “Paralytic Stalks at times resembles modern classical with its intricate compositions, while at others echoes of neo-prog, pseudo-country, and 60s pop can be heard.” Their previous two albums, Skeletal Lamping and False Priest, had a mixed response, though I personally loved the latter.
