Obscure Sound: Best of January 2013

indie music compilation

This is the first compilation in two months due to December’s Best Albums of 2012 feature, which was time-consuming but definitely worth it. It’s always a lot of fun to be reminded of the year’s best. Re-discovering a bunch of great material tends to satiate my desire for new sounds throughout the holidays. But as that came to an end, there were a bunch of quality artists waiting to be heard with brand new material. This is what January’s compilation represents. It’s the first of 2013, a year that has already given us a handful of outstanding albums. The new My Bloody Valentine is a beast of an album, somehow matching mammoth expectations. January releases from Toro y Moi, Ducktails, and Local Natives all hit the spot as well. All of these albums are highly recommended, but this compilation features a cast of relatively lesser-known acts — for the most part. I couldn’t resist putting “Letter of Intent” up top. What a killer track from Ducktails. Expect reviews of most these albums to appear in the near future; we’ll be resuming reviews on a frequent basis shortly. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the compilation. It’s a great start to a new year.

  1. Getting into the new year musically can be a discouraging time after listening to “best ofs” for a month. But then you hear some great new tunes and all is well with the world again. Big thanks for helping find these listening gems.
