Culture Culture – “Pouring Down”

Synth-poppers Culture Culture come from the city of Atlanta, a city with a rich musical history that contains a multitude of genre-based success. Hotlanta has produced some of the best hip-hop stars of the past few decades (Outkast, The-Dream), with many of these artists incorporating elements of funk and soul into their sound. Culture Culture aren’t producing hip-hop, but their stylish synth-pop blends elements of funk in tantalizing fashion — an Atlanta trademark, it seems, regardless of one’s primary stylistic affection.

Culture Culture just released a new five-track EP, with its two singles being “Giving It Up” and “Pouring Down”. The latter is particularly excellent, straddling between two areas for the most part: crunchy bass-driven funk with tasty guitar licks, and romantic synth-pop featuring retrospective synth pads and lulling woodwinds. It’s a stunning combination of hook-y funk-pop and blaring electronica, as if Paul Weller revitalized The Style Council and got Chromeo to produce. Culture Culture master this sound throughout the new EP, which you can stream in full below. Fans of Toro y Moi, Chromeo, or any funk-tinged infectious electronic project need to check this release out, pronto:

  1. I checked out “Use Me.” That is a pretty chill song. Well put together, but it makes me wanna DANCE!

Reminds me a lot of the Superheroes, if you know them. (Check out Julianna if you’ve never heard them).
