Native Gold – “Fickle”

native gold

LA-based electronic project Native Gold is comprised of longtime friends Lee Young and Michael Weeks, both originally from South Euclid, Ohio. They began sharing tidbits from their debut EP A Man We All Admire in late 2015, drawing acclaim from the likes of the previously featured Son Lux, who called the track “Begun to Begin” “a tense and haunting gem”. The duo plans to finally put out the EP on July 5th, with “Fickle” hopefully begin a preview of what to expect. There are some major Thom Yorke vibes here — not so much in the vocal tone, but in the general embracing of glitchy and airy percussion, contrasted with industrial-sounding synth pads that lean toward the brass spectrum and concise lyrical quips. The sparse interludes – like at the 50-second mark – also remind of Radiohead efforts like “Where I End And You Begin” — high complements indeed.
