Among Authors – “The Overture”

/

Seattle-based Among Authors produces a supremely emotional and melodic sound, with lead singer and keyboardist Ian Ketterer projecting a captivating, quivering presence reminiscent of Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste and How to Dress Well’s Tom Krell, both capable of soaring heights as well as devastating, subdued emotional shakes. Ketterer underwent open-heart surgery at the age of 23, so the band suggests the experience lent an extra push to his emotional presence. In addition to their music featuring in the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One game ‘On a Roll’, out late this year, Among Authors just released their debut full-length, featuring excellent tracks like “The Overture”.

Strings adorn Ketterer’s vocals in the first minute, with expansion occurring through the 6+ minute journey, until it concludes with textural majesty akin to Sigur Ros. Stirring strings rise to a climax at around 02:08, when clanging guitars mesh with the piano and symphonic elements to utmost precision. It’s a powerfully resounding track, off a highly recommended debut in I AM BECOME that can be streamed in full below:
