Shrek Is Love – “Lord Farquaad”

/

R&B four-piece Shrek Is Love spans from Los Angeles to NYC, their members operating on different coasts though with a mutual aim for smooth, laid-back R&B goodness — with some fairly wacky subject matter, particularly regarding love and Shrek, which they dub the star of the “best animated movie of all time.” Despite the R&B tag, the group’s incorporation of vaporwave and 8-bit synth fun makes their sound particularly unique, as shown on the catchy track “Lord Farquaad”, where R&B and funk rhythms combine with a synth-laden melody for a sound that’s simultaneously vintage and mindful of meme magic. The music is particularly polished, with jazz-y piano lines becoming especially impressive around 01:48. The track’s second half, starting around the three-minute mark, showcases another innovative jazz-infused segment, helping lead back into the infectious R&B allure of the beginning.

The track is one of three off their new EP Shrek Is Love, Vol 1: This Is My Swamp.
