Good review, especially the way you break down the songs, but one gripe I have: you should invest in a thesaurus. By the end of the first paragraph all I could do was scoff at the number of times the word “eclectic” (or some variant) was used. You also mentioned Spencer Krug’s work ethic more times than I was comfortable with.

Anyways, about the album. It’s definitely more accessible, which isn’t saying that much… I love Random Spirit Lover, it’s one of my favorite albums I’d say, but it took a while to grow on me. I appreciated Shut Up I Am Dreaming mainly for its weirdness before I really started listening to the lyrics.
Spencer Krug writes some of the most thoughtful, literary lyrics I’ve ever seen/heard. Pure excellence. 🙂

Interesting review -- thanks. I know what you mean about ardent and (to a certain extent) rawness ... Though I think Random Spirit Lover was sometimes more raw in terms of being 'lo-fi'. As I say in my review of the album, I didn't feel this record is quite as adventurous and irrepressible as RSL ... I found it a bit 'safer', somehow. But interesting to read an alternative perspective.

Good CD, but I disagree. Paper Lace was my favorite on the new album. (Only because I had already been introduced to Idiot Heart and You Go On Ahead before the rest of the album.) I don’t like Swan Lake as much as I do Sunset Rubdown anyway. Honestly, I don’t like them much at all. (Not trying to talk badly, just my opinion.) Out of all the bands Wolf Parade-related, Sunset Rubdown is simply the best! Krug is a musical genius and I can’t wait til their concert that I am attending in Austin!

I agree with you there. I find "Paper Lace" to be the weakest song on Dragonslayer, but that's not to say it is by any means bad. I was never a big fan of the Swan Lake version to begin with, but I can understand how the lo-fi technicalities on the Swan Lake version add a nicer overall touch. In my opinion though, Dragonslayer is simply a great and consistent album. It's pretty great when a 50-minute album seems too short, leaving listeners begging for more. Knowing Krug though, he'll probably have something else to satisfy listeners by the end of the year.

Very good review but I like the “Paper Lace” Version on Swan Lake’s Enemy Mine a lot more.
