An interesting list. I am always looking for new music to listen to and none of the new stuff seems to grab me so I often check out the best albums of a given year. I love the Grizzly Bear album and the Dirty Projectors. I tried to get into the St, Vincent but I couldn't seem to dig it, might need to give it another try. Thanks for the list

When I try to buy it on itunes it says its only available to the Swedish itunes, not us. I can switch over to swedish itunes but then can't purchase anything, only listen. Any advise?

Animal Collective deserves everything they get, and I mean everything. In a time where it's very hard to not show your influences on your sleeves and copy one style to the next, Animal Collective comes off as nearly 100% original. I've been a fan for a long time, and love them to death.

To say that MPP has no hooks and no memorable melodies(while I try to respect your opinion) is pretty much complete bull. It would be like saying The Kinks never wrote a catchy song. From beginning to end the melodies are almost completely perfect(much like a kinks or beatles album), which is pretty amazing for a band that is so experimental. Usually melodies comes second to experimentation and rhythm in psychedelic/experimental music. Considering that pop music is based almost exclusively on catchy melodies and hooks(Open up your open up your open up your throat!), I'd have to agree that this album is psychedelic electro pop to it's fullest.

Anyways, I very much enjoyed your review of MPP and the new Flaming Lips album, and agree almost 100% on both.

I appreciate the effort that went into creating this list. It shows. Top "whatever" lists are inherently subjective and that's part of the fun. I'm turned on to a lot of new music from this site and to me music discovery is an elixir. However, I've got a real issue with Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion being ranked the best album of 2009. It's not that I think you missed the boat in relation to some more deserving disc, it's just that if this is the best of the year than it was a year to forget. I'm no music prude. I Iove good teeth clenching dissonance, but this just comes across as gimmicky. Furthermore, I disagree with the categorizing this music as pop. There are no hooks here and the melodies are unmemorable. I recall the first time I heard it I was unimpressed. I put it back on after seeing your list and am listening to it now as I write this. Sorry, still no sale.
