This is the Rough Trade album club choice for April... and by far the most disappointing one in over a year of subscribing. The saving grace is that the "bonus" disc is a copy of jj no. 2, although my good will towards that album is now rather tainted by the rushed and limp sequel.

My wife, who hasn't heard jj no.2 yet, commented on how instantly forgettable jj no. 3 is on a first listen, so I certainly don't think it's disappointment due to high expectations.... just a poor record.

Also by any pop record standards the lyrics are terrible. I was wincing at some of the rhymes. Unfair to criticise a band writing in a second language maybe...

I don't think any album in this world is objectively enjoyable though. I thought I gave plenty of reasons in the feature why I was disappointed, at least enough to warrant MY own opinion. Varying opinions is one of the reasons why art is so interesting and to deny people of such by placing it purely on their expectations is insulting to their own personal taste. If this is "complaining" to you then I have nothing else to say.

if you didn't like it, its because your expectations are too high, which the previous album probably set. The beauty of it is that if you don't expect anything, which is what i did when i gave it a listen, then it can be quite enjoyable. The soft melodies are relaxing and although it doesn't evoke the same feeling as maybe "ecstasy" did on the previous album, it still evokes a feeling, and that, is what i feel is the most important. So quit complaining. sit back and relax, enjoy it.

personally, I still consider it a follow-up. just because they wrote it around the same time period does not mean the same focus, creative energy, and ambition was involved. if it was a sister album then I feel they would have released it as a double-album; "sister albums" are meant to be released nearly concurrently, not as a marketing gimmick to employ when everyone forgets about jj no. 2. they were obviously weary about the cohesiveness of it considering they released it nearly a year later. judging by the sound of this I can't blame them.

obviously by the disappointing results of this album, they were either trying to rush an album so they wouldn't have to work for awhile or were simply exhausted after working on two albums (if this is apparently the case). if they did record it at the same time as you said, i have lost some respect for them since the intent here seems obvious.

just some horrible decision-making by the band...

no, that wasn't intentional but it's a great link either way. jj has no myspace so i left that one blank and forgot to come back to it haha. thanks for the heads up though, everyone should check it out: http://myspace.com/yeasayer

yeah the jj allbum was a huge disappointment, but i still think they can find the magic of jj no. 2 again.

Really, Let Go was one of the high points (at least the beginning of the song)? It's the only track I'd heard off No 3 and I was extremely underwhelmed. Was hoping it was a blip. Too bad.

I hope your MySpace link to Yeasayer was intentional - especially since they've now put Odd Blood in its entirety up.
