Matthew And The Arrogant Sea – “Swedish Death Metal Cassette”

/

“Swedish Death Metal Cassette” comes via longtime (since 2001) act Matthew And The Arrogant Sea, hailing from Denton, Texas. Their album from 2017, The Glooms Pt. 1 features a number of inspiring track, especially this gem alongside “Broke (For Years)”. In particular, “Swedish Death Metal Cassette” does a great job of showing the band’s eclectic instrumental arsenal, ranging from symphonic additions that remind of Beirut, to narrative-driven pieces of folk akin to The Decemberists. Around the two-minute mark, the various symphonic elements converge alongside the chiming acoustics and “la-la”-ing to make for a special sound, one that consumes with its stylistic versatility and spontaneous structural shifts. So — “burn the vinyl, and smoke what little you got,” while giving this a listen.
