Tallahassee-based Ice Jackson immerses throughout the new full-length The Flu, a backronym for “Florida Life Understood” that paints a realistic portrait of his home city. As the Believer Entertainment CEO’s first full-length since 2018, the record explores how hedonistic pursuits can lead to unintended consequences. Consuming lyricism blends with dynamic beats, blending ghostly beats and wit with a cinematic perspective on the grinding, loyalty, and the evolving obligations of adulthood in the Sunshine State.

A riveting opening track, “Whose Car We Gonna Take” melds an intoxicating beat with confident vocal prowess. “Southside’s outside, put your hands up high / If I tell you you my dawg then we fam for life,” the vocals stir amidst a hazy, psychedelic backing, bolstered thereafter by moody piano as the “I need your help” beckoning continues. Lyrical perspectives of loyalty, friendship, and carpe-diem opportunism coexist alongside confident “grinding mode” swagger. The ensuing “Sunpass” continues the knack for ghostly beats, here progressing from nocturnal synth pads into a glimmering infectiousness; a spacey synth-pop production enamors within a charismatic “two bad bitches” vocal sequence, inducing replays with its personality and hookiness.

Another standout track, “Outta There” fuses the emotional ferocity present in preceding tracks with a fantastic central hook. Thumping bass and gliding keys compel within the introspective verses, reflecting on the comforts of familiarity in the face of tumult — “back to the same old slumbers, back to the same old wonders” — before moving into a reprisal of the excellent hook: “you know my style, I’m outta there!” The Flu continuously impresses with its mixture of heady verses and punchy, replay-tempting culminations, and “Outta There” is an excellent example of such.

An especially gripping intensity is apparent on the album’s title track, navigating with a haunting piano-forward beat and “you just caught the flu!” vocal entrancement — with references to envy in the form of the “green-eyed monster” and a biting subconscious moving artfully within a lyrically enveloping, visceral tour-de-force of a production. The subsequent “On Brand” moves back into a more pop-friendly territory, its flourishing woodwind additions and ethereal la-la vocal backings complementing witty hip-hop lyrical flows. “I get paid, that’s so on brand,” a vocal swagger emerges within a particularly momentum-filled sequence, arising into that delectably frolicking “talk dirty to me” central hook.

Album finale “All I Know” caps it all off with a fully satiating impact. A breezy guitar-laden jangle leads the underlying beat, while playfully soulful vocal backings mirror the steadily unveiling lead. “Surrounded by people, but you go die alone,” the vocals let out, reflecting on the weight of the world as parents age and obligations mount; it’s a reflective, melodically consuming success that concludes the stellar The Flu with an affecting glow. The Flu is a thoroughly successful hip-hop full-length from Ice Jackson.

A standout hip-hop track, “Money?” serves as the tonal anchor for the album Don’t Run From the Rain, showcasing a seamless collaboration between Era 51, Blvck Svm, and producer southpaw. The excellent production on the track emphasizes a “spliff-tempo” groove, blending avant-garde hip-hop with lofi sensibilities. By integrating unconventional cash-register foley and dense, late-night textures, the San Francisco-based southpaw creates a dynamic atmosphere. The track especially highlights Era 51’s versatile flow and Blvck Svm’s rhythmic hook.

“Money?” kicks off with gripping mystique. Woozy, warming textures combine with a radio-dial vocal sample feeling, wordless and lushly absorbing as gentle rhythms and cash-register effects intertwine. “Money on my mind, I’m locked in,” Era 51’s captivating vocal presence emerges thereafter, traversing from introspective haziness into escalating charisma. The “broke, not trying to be woke” sequence is especially infectious in its momentary uptick in vocal tempo. “I’m only aligned where the cash is,” Era 51 continues with consuming allure, the insights on all-consuming greed succeeding within the delectably lethargic beat.

The return to the initial vocal lead, referring to a state of being dormant, continues themes of drive and motivation — hopefully coming out the other side with vigor. An absolutely gorgeous final sequence, with echo-y choir vocals, then emanates — bringing “Money?” to a wholly satiating conclusion. Both moody and powerful, “Money?” is a surefire hip-hop success from Era 51, Blvck Svm, and southpaw.

Los Angeles-based rapper RapboiJones crafts a fully immersive hip-hop sound on new album Pray For Diamonds, a solo statement that stirs in its atmospheric productions and carpe-diem lyrical sentiments. A former member of UglyFace, he steps fully into his own voice here, blending soulful melodic touches, nocturnal synth atmospheres, and lyrically grounded storytelling. Framed as a transition from chaos to clarity, the album channels grit, grace, and lived experience into a sound that feels both intimate and elevated.

“Its only pressure” kicks off the album with gorgeous intrigue, melding glistening piano tones and subdued vocal soulfulness into the emergence of RapboiJones’ riveting hip-hop vocal flow. “I think the pressure finally gettin’ to me,” he lets out, wearing a heart-on-sleeve appeal fondly reminiscent of J. Cole in its balancing of melodic immediacy and emotive solemnity. The ensuing “Last Generation” dazzles in its synth-laden atmospherics, lyrically contemplating the power of ego and the fleeting nature of time — and proving especially infectious during the cheery, layered vocal additions — “the greatest MCs.”

Another standout track, “Second Life” channels a late-night, lounge-set soundscape in its vibe-y keys and jazzy rhythmic easing-in, enthralling in its reveal upon the vocals letting out “they moving too slow.” “I feel like this my second life,” a triumphant vocal character emerges upon an uptick in fervency, reminiscing on a flawed “first time around” and cherishing the nature of second chances. The album’s lengthiest effort, the six-minute “King Imposter,” also captivates — channeling a woozy atmosphere, with shades of Frank Ocean in its nocturnal synths, and proving infectious in its pitch-ranging vocal infusions; the four-minute turn is especially memorable in its brisker, soulful switch-up. Pray For Diamonds is a consistently enveloping hip-hop success from RapboiJones.

A riveting hip-hop display that ranges from spacey electronic intrigue to soaring guitar-laden charisma, “Still Sick” is a recent single from Wichita-based artist Thain.
“This is two Midwest hip hop artists, and a producer from entirely different realms coming together and finding common ground,” Thain says of the track’s creative process. “Hippy K compliments the chorus with stabs/ad libs and our tonal differences really make each other stand out in the track.” The byproduct is a consummate success from Thain, who has written songs both as a solo artist and as a vocalist to For the Birds, an acclaimed Wichita-based project that blends hip-hop, metal, funk, reggae, and beyond.

The production commences with spacey synth pulses, glimmering with dreamy entrancement before the arrival of a delectably intense vocal push. “Still sick when I feel like it, drop hits and they still bitin'” the verses exude ample charisma as moody guitar tones enter alongside. Deeper, ominous-toned reflective vocal elements appear with sharp allure. “If you want a seat at the table, then you gonna have to pull up with a throne,” Hippy K’s enthralling segment exudes, furthering the confident notions of artistry within a melodically sating mix. “Still Sick” is wholly memorable output from Thain, Hippy K, and Audio Paradolia.

Hailing from Boston, JAKEWITHSPACES! pushes experimental hip-hop into memorable territory with new album DOPEFUMEMIDI, presenting a bold fusion of eerie synths, twisted beats, and fragmented melodies. Each track layers warped textures and inventive rhythms, blending introspective lyrics with enjoyably off-kilter sound design. The result is a darkly impactful hip-hop sound, reminding of acts like JPEGMAFIA and Shabazz Palaces.

“THE SILENCE” is a gripping album opener, fusing glistening instrumentation and laid-back rhythms with lyrical themes of defiance and self-reliance. The verses oscillate between survivalist pride — “It was always just me, stood ten toes” — and existential disillusionment; imagery of smoke, static, and false idols evoke a fractured modern psyche, invigorating especially as blaring brass elements infuse around the track’s mid-point. Ensuing track “MY SOUL, THE ANTIDOTE” is another standout, feeling delectably eerie in its spacey synth elements. A stirring sense of genuine artistic sentiment is conveyed, both in the “I’d never sell my mother fucking soul” ardor and the drive to “put that mother fucker in an audio file” “before I die.”

An emotively charged success, “REAP WHAT YOU SOW!” is especially haunting with its piano progressions — twinkling yet melancholic — as head-nodding rhythms enter shortly thereafter. This track fuses gritty introspection with vulnerable imagery, exploring ambition, loss, and disillusionment. The refrain “I’m so young but the love grow old” captures a tension of chasing purpose in a world where the grass “ain’t grow.” It’s an artfully accomplished success, ruminating on the modern world with insight and relatability. DOPEFUMEMIDI is abundant in quality songwriting and atmospheric hip-hop productions.

The new album from Chicago-based artist roar taylor, kostner is a consuming hip-hop success. With a commanding mix of grit and grace, the record finds him pairing sharp lyricism with richly textured beats, threading ambition, grief, and resilience into narratives that feel both deeply personal and universally resonant. Its sound is big and unflinching, yet unafraid to sit in moments of reflection.

“lottery pick” kicks off the album with a soulfully invigorating charisma, infusing triumphant-sounding brass and infectious rhythms amidst roar taylor’s precise vocal flow. “What’s the Jacksons without a frontman? What’s a young man without a check? Just a jumpman,” the vocals let out, artfully capturing ambition and its role on identity and status — asking how much value one truly has without their defining feature and drive for greatness.

PaperWork features on the ensuing “mike in retrograde,” captivating in its magnetic beat — infusing dreamy vocal samples and pulsating bass, as the emcees provide both reflections — “let’s go back when we was younger and still had that hunger” — and current-day laments; its take on how hardships and resulting perseverance build inner-strength is particularly impactful.

Another standout track, “say less” traverses with a mellower disposition tonally in its lushly repeating instrumentation. roar taylor and Uncle Cam immerse with their vocal insights, exploring the hardships apparent for young black men in a society that’s often harsh and biased. “You gotta be smarter than him, harder than them,” roar taylor’s vocals exude, lamenting a “harder of hearing” and “parking our feelings” in response to this strife — resulting in built-up emotion and frustration, which Uncle Cam also captures in brisker form across the track’s second half.

The subsequent “nod ya head(the processional)” continues conveying personal struggle, here in the context of mourning. Serene guitar twangs and soulful wordless vocal elements complement the commanding lyrical drive, saying from the get-go that the track “goes out to everybody who have lost somebody.” “Lost my sister now my head, placed a picture by my bed,” the anguish is apparent, further emitting the lingering impacts of losing a family or friend. Features from Major and PaperWork inject further emotion. “Trying to process all this pain,” a particularly enthralling segment admits, building seamlessly to a heartfelt send-off.

The highlights continue throughout kostner. The title track unveils a late-night vibe in its vibe-y keys and vocal introspection, demonstrating a carpe-diem sentiment within a beat that reminds fondly of early Kendrick. “marcellus” also compels with its warbly, spacey production — sounding like a lovable cross between Thundercat and Shabazz Palaces — while album finale “black forces” plays with shades of Tupac in its “my vision is clear” lyrical strut, hauntingly throwback beat and evident lyrical wisdom, traversing through stories of the projects and a life full of perseverance. kostner establishes roar taylor as a voice of weight and intention, crafting music that confronts struggle head-on while carving out space for hope, power, and perseverance.

A more vibrant vocal lead emerges thereafter, along with a soulful backing reflection. “Time is a prison and I can’t get out,” they let out. Gorgeous string arrangements come into fuller focus here, as well, making for an absolutely consuming mid-point. “The sunlight fades away, I’ll pave the way,” the hip-hop vocal entry returns to close the track out with sating impact.

A gripping hip-hop sound compels throughout APERTURE, the new album from Bay Area-based artist Jthurston, as it explores themes of selfhood and personal identity. From the soulfully infectious vocal flow of the intro to the lush, late-night introspection of “EVENTUALLY,” the album’s riveting production supports a philosophical meditation on the self. Jthurston poetically weaves in the mechanics of a camera—lens, lighting, and exposure—within the framework of Carl Jung’s shadow aspect philosophy.

The tracks on APERTURE portray a journey of personal development, capturing moments shaped by trauma, doubt, and ego, as well as resilience and truth. These emotive contemplations reflect a soul and identity coming into focus within a metaphorical darkroom—gradually stepping into full light and away from the ambiguity of shadows. The result is a compelling and cohesive project that illustrates healing through the embrace of one’s hidden self.

“INTRO” kicks off the album with a poignant vocal refrain, aspiring in “trying to see you” like a glimpse that keeps eluding the camera lens. Jthurston’s precise vocal flow exudes a catchy hip-hop cohesion amidst the moody backdrop, with steady percussion and the “trying to see” soulful backing vocal. “Everyone comes with an angle, mine’s forever acute,” he continues, furthering the camera metaphors amidst ponderings on being wary of societal elements — like the acceptance of others, and the foreboding nature of self-first individuals. The “setting a destination” melodic shift is especially captivating, exemplary of Jthurston’s knack for catching, effective tonal shifts.

Another highlight, “SAFE” embraces the dark pop realm — weaving woozy synth pads and a harmonious, escalating vocal presence alongside pulsing percussion. “You know when the stars align,” the vocals let out, into a “need you” pining that’s bolstered by magnetic synth lines — and into a lovely, caressing central hook with a gorgeous electro-pop vulnerability. An acceptance of baring one’s soul, particularly in the context of being upfront about emotions, is conveyed artfully here. The ensuing “I TOLD YOU SO” continues that nocturnal pop feeling, while re-infusing a consuming hip-hop vocal delivery following the replay-inducing pop moments.

“INTUITION” is a masterful standout as well, especially in its chilling atmospheric construction. “I know half these people gon’ be happy at my funeral,” a solemn initial vocal admits, building into a “better off alone” admission — touting a renewed confidence in oneself, and not relying on the presence of others that possess a harmful ethos. The trusting of personal “intuition” on this track makes for another enveloping success, as does “CUTTHROAT,” which melds memorable piano-led beats alongside eclectic, old-school hip-hop vocal forays. APERTURE is an enthralling hip-hop success, with commendable lyrical consciousness, from Jthurston.
