The second single from Echo Park-based group Sandy Hawkins, “Cherry Chapstick” shows a winning sample-friendly vein of psych-pop with hip-hop influence — like something off of The Avalanches’ Wildflower. The sample-based hook at the 30-second mark expands nicely into a perky vocal lead, accompanied nicely by sampled vocal enthusiasm in the back. The various vocal tones play engagingly, punctuated sporadically by the sunlight-directed hook. This consuming track was crafted by the group in their bungalow studio, representing one of five songs from their upcoming debut EP, out this fall.
