A commanding display of alt-rock and shoegaze savvy, In The Blur is the sophomore album from Pacific Northwest band Waves Crashing. Following their debut, Effection — which landed among our top albums of 2025 — this eight-track follow-up sharpens their signature shoegaze textures and post-punk rhythms, deftly tackling industry pressures and societal division beneath an absorbing array of driving, multi-layered distortion. The album’s lead single and opening track, “Feel The Glow,” caught our ears last month with its fantastic shoegaze/alt-rock synergy, and the rest of In The Blur maintains that strong level of songwriting and production.

A blast of whirring, gauzy guitars lifts up “Circles” right away, exuding a sense of searching amidst the fervent, fuzzy guitars. “In the vast beyond we search the waterways, to discover ancient blues for artistry,” Joshua Calisti’s soaring vocals let out, achieving an added twangy resonance during the “no guarantee of higher ground” chorus. Its perspectives on a demanding music industry and how quality artistry often goes overlooked melds with a bursting rock ardor, showcasing the band’s knack for both impactful lyricism and layered guitar-forward sophistication.

Another standout track, “Marine Garden” exudes a breezier charm, with seagull squawking leading into a hypnotic jangling and “walking along the sandy path” lyrical contemplation. The production here shifts from the opening two tracks’ ardent rock appeal into a dreamier post-punk tint, fondly reminiscent of Wild Nothing in the lush vocal presence and jangly guitar delights. “Divide” arrives next, returning to a shoegaze-y ferocity initially, and seamlessly moving between spacious contemplation and heavier distortion; perspectives of a divided society stir as well, alongside.

In addition to the album’s consistently enthralling original songwriting, a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” unveils prior to the album’s finale. Dreamy synths and steady rhythms swell into a heavier, warming distortion as the track’s classic chorus hits. Waves Crashing’s re-imagining plays wonderfully, utilizing their ability to traverse between lush and ardent tonal realms. Then comes album finale “Next To Me,” a fully satisfying send-off that ventures from first-half fuzziness to a more nocturnal jangling. Bolstered by lyrical catharsis tracing an escape from existential dread into the quiet sanctuary of love, it closes the album with impactful appeal. In The Blur is another wholly immersive success from Waves Crashing.

Reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Mayonaise” in its ascent from hazy, lush guitar swirls to blasts of warming distortion, “Specter of Circumstance” is a gripping track from Blonde Goth. Inspired as well by J Mascis’ guitar solos, the track is a standout success from the project of Nicky, who notes “the song came to me in a dream, as I was drifting in and out of other dimensions, worlds, and realities.” Whirring, textured guitars complement dynamic vocals, excelling across both dreamy initial retrospection and shouting ardor, as the conclusion hits. “Specter of Circumstance” is a thriller from Blonde Goth.

After a 13-year hiatus, Atlanta-based band Last Relapse re-emerge with “Everyone Dances Outside of Their Bodies,” the first glimpse of their forthcoming five-track EP, due this fall. The riveting comeback finds the band exploring the tension between identity and reflection — specifically, the duality of who we are versus who we’re becoming — through a widescreen indie-rock lens that fuses raw confession with immersive, dream-tinged soundscapes.

“This song lives where contradiction becomes motion,” the band says. “It’s the moment you notice your inner mirror—two forces pulling in opposite directions—and you learn to move with both.”

The track develops with climactic, artful allure — starting with moody guitar jangles that flow with nocturnal atmospheric appeal. Sporadic in-and-out rhythmic infusions bolster a ghostly vocal entrancement, letting out: “The room was open but it looked like there was something pressing on all of you / The room looked nice, a well decorated vacuum.” The chilly, emotive rock procession then expands with fervent appeal past the one-minute turn, with the “talking all over each other” sequence excelling in its impassioned vocal shift and layered guitar work.

The track’s captivating rock soundscape is especially apparent in the final minute, when a scorching-hot guitar solo takes hold and the vocals let out an ardent title-touting declaration. Succeeding with both dreamier introspection and emotionally gripping rock expanses, “Everyone Dances Outside of Their Bodies” is a fantastic return from Last Relapse.

A textured rock intensity consumes on “With/Without,” an enveloping new track from Denver-based band Blackberry Crush. The release represents the first single from their upcoming EP My Own Backyard, which explores “the confusion of growing up; the middle years.” This journey to adulthood exudes a sense of in-between, with simultaneous yearning for a childhood’s carefree bliss, though also pining for the freedom of adulthood — while still being wary of its looming responsibilities.

The EP, which was mastered by Corey Coffman (of Gleemer), navigates childhood through both child and adult perspectives — ruminating on the future and past across five tracks that convey the solitude of growing up, and also a variety of situations that arise — from where one is forced to assume adulthood responsibilities too soon, to a strong desire to become an adult and embrace its independence.

“With/Without” develops with climactic allure. Fantastic, dexterous drums build into jangling guitars with a grungy nostalgia, excelling further into a distortion-laden buzzing as dreamy vocals enter the mix. The one-minute turn compels in its swell from solemn guitar pulses into an intensified rhythmic backing, attaining an alt-rock and shoegaze-y fusion as multi-layered vocals ease in thereafter.

The track’s final minute is a commanding display of rock-forward atmospherics, melding whirring guitar ardency and rhythmic bustling with faint, ghostly backing shimmers. “With/Without” is another fantastic track from Blackberry Crush, who first caught our ears earlier this year with the track “Goodbye.”

A fantastic debut single from Austin, TX-based band whisper, “Cross Country” unveils a shoegaze and alt-rock immersion amidst thematic ruminations on long-distance love. “They say distance makes a love grow fonder, but I think it’s the one thing keeping us apart,” delectably hazy vocals let out, as whirring guitars are bolstered by twanging, glistening captivation. Brighton, UK-based band CARNE invigorate with a soaring rock sound on “VAST,” their second single. Drawing from ’90s alt-rock inspirations like PJ Harvey and Smashing Pumpkins, the four-piece channel an impassioned and dynamic appeal — traversing from jangling verses into a grunge-touched ardor within the central chorus. Shades of Wolf Alice show in their commanding, stylish rock sound — consuming in dynamics between heavier and introspective moments.

“I’ve landed In the in-between, vast and green,” Carmen Mellino’s spaciously inviting vocals open within a playful guitar-fronted realm; the section is book-ended by an onslaught of wonderfully raucous guitar tones, reminding of Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins in their whirring distortion, and especially in the stomping briefness that takes hold into the “unveil this masquerade” pleading.

CARNE thoroughly impress with “VAST,” which they describe as “about feeling closer to people when you’re in a new environment but disconnected once you’re back home.” They also note it dealing “with the struggle and needs of connection while trying to move on from the intensity and joy of touring.”

Cate Hukle’s riveting vocal performance shows alongside, seamlessly alternating between lush intrigue and more upfront emotion as the distortion-heavy “sink into the deep” moments arrive.

Capturing the experience of being treated like a monster by society, the track takes particular inspiration from historian Susan Stryker’s essay “My Words to Victor Frankenstein Above the Village of Chamounix.” “The Wave” and the upcoming album were recorded at Revolver Studios by Collin Hegna (The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Federale), in addition to at the band’s own Synthetikit Studio. Also impressing with previous releases like their self-titled EP, Kallai continue to churn out a captivatingly melodic and emotive vein of rock that makes a strongly enduring impression.
