An impactful track from London-based artist People Pleasing, “The Movies” moves with a dynamically atmospheric rock appeal. It ascends from lush, twangy emotion into a midpoint ardor, and then back to a blissfully introspective finale. “The Movies is about loving someone so deeply but knowing you don’t belong together in that way,” the artist explains. “They aren’t taking the steps they need to recover from their trauma, and although they are like someone straight out of a movie, you know the love would not last.”

Recorded at Goldsmiths Music Studio in London, the production also features drummer Ellis Dupuy (Puma Blue, Nilüfer Yanya) and mixing from Joy Stacey (The Smile, Arcade Fire, Islet). Tranquil guitar twangs and warming rhythms open the track’s riveting soundscape, where lonesome synth tones and glistening guitar jangles intertwine toward a retrospective “I knew a girl who thought she was in the movies” vocal immersion.

The serene tonal disposition there is matched by dreamy guitar work, while the two-minute turn enthralls in its chilly synth injections and “she wasn’t from here” vocal intensity, with the ensuing “fucking up a bit” drive being especially melodic in its heart-wrenching delivery. “The Movies” is a wholly affecting standout of a track from People Pleasing.

Originally from Vermont and now based in Nashville, Lillian Leadbetter consumes with a calming folk introspection on “Move the Moon,” growing from understated acoustic-set ruminations to multi-layered vocal emotion, gushing “if I could pick and choose, I’d be with you.” A strong sense of adoration shows throughout, capturing the complexities of a long-distance relationship — “hangin’ out your heart on the wire, through the telephone” — as well as enduring love, where even a daunting task like moving the moon pales in comparison to the fervent emotions a couple can hold.

Leadbetter says of the track’s inspiration:

“This song was written in a long distance situationship that spanned an ocean and many months. As we fell in love, we both wondered if there would ever be a way to be together.” She continues: “Move the Moon is an anthem of impossible love. From a desire to have it all, the love, the life and the time together, knowing that it’s as uncontrollable as a persons ability to influence the moon. Longingly, this song ends an open ended question, perhaps suggesting that: if I was indeed powerful enough move the moon, is this still what I would choose?”

Spanish act Drive Lullaby craft a lovable mixture of dreamy synth-pop and post-punk rhythmic charm on new single “Isn’t it Strange?” — described thematically as “basically about how two people from very different worlds discover that love or connection can exist despite their differences.”

“Your stars they tangled into mine,” a smitten vocal radiance lets out, following a steady building-up of spacey synths and clanging bass undercurrent, the latter reminding enjoyably of New Order. The ensuing chorus delights in its more expressive twanging and layered vocal enthusiasm, letting out: “Isn’t strange, how we collide?” Resembling a fantastic mixture of New Order and The Associates, “Isn’t it Strange?” is an enveloping success from Drive Lullaby, artfully capturing the beauty of connection across personal differences.

“Strange Articulation” is a riveting rock track from Los Angeles-based band The Outdoors, who describe the release as “about the weird way we all can look when trying to communicate honestly (or not)… the gestures, the emphasis, the articulations we nervously make when trying to make connections with other humans.”

A trickling effect and climactic rhythms drive into reflective pulses of guitar, while a smoothly impactful vocal emergence remarks on how it’s “a strange articulation.” “Lost along the border of this no man’s land, we don’t stand a chance,” the vocals continue with compelling mystique, ascending in emotion as a soaring delivery admits “I can’t explain anymore.”

Moody guitar twangs and subtle synth buzzing envelop thereafter, while themes of communication once again emerge in the “I can’t explain anymore” heartrending and title-touting refrain. This final sequence enthralls in its guitar-driven instrumentation, jangly and delectably moody with a likeness to Radiohead, while the vocals throughout retain a powerful delivery that sounds like a blend of Win Butler and Matt Berninger. The result is a rock success filled with palpable atmosphere and stirring thematic introspection.

Crunching guitar distortion and lushly absorbing vocals intertwine on “happy birthday mr. president,” a memorable rocker from Cleveland-based duo Grumpy Plum. Coming off 2023 full-length Real Tough Guy, the project excels with a climactic, no-frills prowess on this track, culminating in a fuzzed-out title-touting declaration, sarcastic and bitingly political in its critique of warmongering politicians: “Happy birthday Mr. President / No I don’t know where your presents went / Have you looked under the bodies?
Tallulah Swasey (vocals/songwriter) spearheads a fully immersive sound, especially resonant in the approach to the three-minute mark, where panting rhythms and sturdy guitar distortion cohesively blend amidst Swasey’s dreamily enticing vocal presence. Combining with visceral, poignant lyrical commentary, “happy birthday mr. president” is a surefire success from the ascending duo.

“What if everything could be different, in an instant?” she sings during this magnetic chorus, reminding stirringly of a cross between Camera Obscura and Japanese Breakfast in the mixture of bursting guitars and expressive vocals. “Scam Likely” is a magnetic, replay-inducing charmer from TIFFY. It marks another success for the artist, who first caught our ears in 2023 with the track “Don’t Take It Personally.”

Sammy elaborates on the track’s inspiration:

“I get an endless amount of scam phone calls; it’s the only thing trying to reach me since no one talks on the phone anymore. I wanted to entertain the idea of what if I just picked up the phone and it actually changed my entire world? I felt this way as a reaction to the relentless digital ether tech void we live in. In producing the tracks it was amazing to expand the range of instruments used. In addition to the standard rock setup on the track we used pedal steel, fun synth organs, and analog gear like a Chamberlin.”

“Can you survive?” a serenely stirring delivery continues during an especially magnetic sequence, emphasizing gorgeous backing harmonies past the three-minute turn. “These eyes still fill with tears,” lyricism exudes a compelling vulnerability, with that free-flowing emotion echoed in the lead’s presence — showing tonal shades of The Blue Nile’s Paul Buchanan. Reassuring “it’s all right” vocal sentiments linger into the satiating conclusion. Achieving a laid-back singer-songwriter aesthetic amidst heart-on-sleeve sentiments of memory and perception, “Under the surface” is a standout success from DrewJam.

“Rendezvous [SLA]” is a compelling neo-soul slow-burn from Gbogboade, a Nigerian-born and London-based artist whose work emphasizes emotive enthrallment and atmospheric depth. The artist draws on the polished vibes of D’Angelo and Sade while crafting an unhurried, impactful neo-soul listening experience. The “travel with no borders” vocal emerges with intoxicating flair, exuding a free-spirited allure as the mix continues to consume; the dashes of exotic brass and flourishes of woodwinds sit enjoyably within the nocturnal production. “When it’s all said and done,” the vocals immerse, stirring in their tonal consistency and suave overall sense.

A riveting soundscape is thoroughly achieved here, with the combination of confident vocal chills, pulses of chilly keys, and sophisticated brassy intrigue making for a stylish appeal — drawing from Sade, D’Angelo, and other artists that excel in letting soundscapes shine. The song structure here flows with lulling, repeating intentionality, shining a spotlight on the moody vocal prowess and vibe-forward instrumentation. “Rendezvous [SLA]” is an enveloping, soulful success from Gbogboade.
