The latter emerge with particular prominence past the 30-second mark, enveloping with a nostalgic, buzzy tonal quality. Caressing electronic pads follow, as do escalated rhythms; the song structure throughout thrives on momentum and gradual additions, making for a climactic listening experience.

Led by New York-based composer Dash Lunde, VPC Ensemble presents Life Is a Strange Loop: Side A, a recursive meditation on consciousness. Intertwining electric viola, flute, samplers, and wordless vocals, the improvisational collective blends ambient space jazz with electroacoustic textures, yielding a deeply immersive and tranquil sonic environment.

“New Life” opens the album with lovely, serene immersion—atmospherically invoking the calmness of the sea in its initial gentle chiming, woodwind caressing, and infusion of chirpy effects, resembling dolphins in communication. Spacey synths infuse seamlessly throughout, as do escalating guitar tones that whir with enjoyable momentum. This blissful opener then leads into “Fleeting,” a track fondly reminiscent of more rock-tinged Oneohtrix Point Never in its melding of frequency-like electronic simmering and soaring guitar lines. Pitter-pattering percussion and ghostly, wordless hums complete the astonishing mix.

Another gem is the aptly titled track “Gorgeous,” which closes the release. A free-flowing atmospheric quality reveals itself within, with touches of electric viola melding with haunting choral harmonies. Budapest-based artist Bárdits Éva‘s solo debut, Inertia, delivers a striking fusion of avant-garde soundscapes and raw confessional songwriting. Recorded entirely at home, the record layers digitally altered guitars, harmonica, and reflective lyricism to construct an emotionally intense, hauntingly intimate atmosphere.

Blares of harmonica combine with a metro-like ambience as the album starts with “Days,” a track that showcases the project’s ability to craft both inventive arrangements and melodically striking compositions. The more active initial atmosphere shifts to solemn guitar strums as the harmonica persists sporadically, leading into a haunting, introspective performance: “Who would choose to spend their days, counting down until it is over?” Electric guitar feedback lingers alongside, while a crackling effect in the conclusion furthers the hypnotic atmosphere. “Days” is a fantastic, dreamy scene-setter.

The album’s highlights are numerous. “Person” is among them, contemplating a sense of self—”Was I ever a person? Was I ever someone with a face and a body and a voice?”—amidst affecting guitar lushness, enveloping in its spacious art-folk sound. The quality doesn’t let up throughout, including album finale “WWHD.” Moody piano and murky spoken-word passages meld together initially, exploring and paraphrasing Hamlet monologues within a serene arsenal of digitally manipulated acoustic guitar, harmonica, and melodica. Abundant in memorable textures and structural creativity, Inertia is an artistically stirring achievement from Bárdits Éva.

Moody guitar textures and ghostly vocal lines combine with ethereal backing harmonies, fashioning a haunting fusion of darkwave energy, driving momentum, and dream-pop allure.

Sturdy percussion and vibrant guitar tones delight throughout the track’s atmospheric introduction, bolstered by effervescent synths and eventually giving way to pulsing bass and panting drums as MatAre’s lead performance arrives. “The moonlit waves that never touch your body,” the vocals continue, the descriptive lyricism and brooding delivery matching the riveting soundscape already established. “Wake the ghosts, for their life has died,” he intones during a gripping chorus, a replay-inducing section of gorgeousness, particularly enhanced by the hauntingly melodic backing vocals of Argentinian artist Denisse Ferrara.

Mode7, the debut conceptual album from French songwriter Julien Daval’s project FloreJack, charts a narrative arc through both intimate acoustic storytelling and indie-pop hookiness. Melodic indie-folk arrangements, escalating song structures, and lush harmonies weave a deeply personal tale of resilience, imagination, and personal transformation.

An affecting folk-forward opener, depictive of the album’s dreamier acoustic directions, “Blindly” delights in its mixture of calming acoustic guitar, lush piano, and ascending vocal harmonies. Lyrically, it captures the alluring haze of staying in a situation you know is toxic. “There’s nothing like the way that you lie, nothing like the way that I kinda trust you blindly,” the lyrics intone, capturing a surrender to blissful deceit. The ensuing “Merry” resembles an aftermath to the realization of toxicity, with a drive to “return to the start of it all” building into multi-layered vocal harmonies, resolving into a peppy title-bearing refrain reminiscent of The Shins, particularly in the exulting “oh darling, I’m not the same.
