Tender guitars, twinkling piano, and a string-laden illumination complement lo-fi hip-hop rhythms on “It always rains on Tuesdays,” an atmospheric new track from Jonny Abbey. The Lisbon-based artist initially took inspiration from the calming introspection of rainy days. The production’s end result was more personal, eventually being a tribute to his grandfather, Arnaldo. Abbey received news on a Tuesday of his grandfather feeling unwell; the single captures a sense of bleakness and loss, though also the meditative-like sense of calm that falling rain can provide.

Guitars are the primary instrumental emphasis initially, accompanied throughout by a moving array of piano, strings, and rain-sampled backdrops. The samples of gently falling rain were recorded in Chambarak, Armenia, providing an apt complement amidst the gentle guitar and piano infusions. The release serves as a tribute to Arnaldo while reflecting on his memory. Bluesy guitar layers hypnotize throughout the first half, as the sound gorgeously expands into frolicking piano and occasional bird-chirping — suggesting a breaking-through of sun following the storm. “It always rains on Tuesdays” is a beautiful, melodic success from Jonny Abbey.

—

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Rainy Days and Late Night Drives.

It’s easy to become immersed in the mesmerizing soundscapes of yhyk, a collaboration between producer Yutaka Hirasaka and bassist Yusuke Kurahara. Released under the beatsupply label, this album transports listeners to the serene mountain lodges of Kumamoto, a city in Kyushu, Japan, where the duo crafted the compelling sounds within. The cassette release, adorned with Yuichi Date’s captivating artwork, adds a tactile charm to the auditory experience. The layers and emotional depths within yhyk create a sonic journey perfect for contemplation.

A steadily unraveling groove takes hold on the opening track “Realize.” Glistening keys and a murmuring bass complement a consistent percussive pulse; tender guitars frolic thereafter, culminating in an emotive soulfulness with warbly, nocturnal intrigue. The album quickly establishes itself as one steeped in intoxicating atmosphere and stellar musicianship. The subsequent “Hike” follows with a contemplative serenity, weaving in brassy sophistication for further late-night allure. An introspective sound fit for rainy days stirs on “Hike.”

“Ubuyama Time” exudes a perkier bounciness, invigorating with its bouncy keys and nodding rhythmic beat. While much of yhyk is adorned with a more relaxed charm, efforts like “Ubuyama Time” and “Yamame 3” move with brisker precision. The latter struts a lounge-y, jazzy appeal in the grooving bass and twangy touches, evolving into the lusher elegance of “Wakka.” yhyk doesn’t startle with abrupt shifts in tone or dynamics, though it maintains a strong level of engrossment, ranging from the caressingly subdued to more invigorating charisma.

Another standout comes in “Friendship.” A vocal-laden percussive element lingers with resonating impact alongside soothing guitars. Beautiful layers of guitar intermingle with stellar cohesion at the mid-point, traversing smoothly back into the quaint beat-boxing complements. Elsewhere, “In the Cedar Forest” moves with hypnotic flair, melding loose-flowing guitars with snappy snares for a blissful sound — a likely reference to the album’s recording location in the Kumamoto mountain lodge. “Morning at Maruka” comes next, fully enveloping with its steadily evolving guitar trickling and calming percussive element.

yhyk is a successful production steeped in atmospheric beauty and calming introspection; it’s an ideal accompaniment to creative sessions or deep thoughts late at night. Yutaka Hirasaka and Yusuke Kurahara have created deeply memorable vibes and soundscapes throughout this resonating release. We’re looking forward to repeatedly getting lost within its soundscapes and soothing allure.

A moody, laid-back intrigue shows on “I’ve Seen The Future,” a memorable debut single from Seeroy. The soulful vocals captivate in their title-touting refrain, lamenting a dark, cold, and lonely imminence. The overall ruminations contrast a higher-pitched refrain with the more sullen lyrical progression, meshing well alongside twinkling keys and tender guitar tones. “I’ve Seen The Future” is a debonair, hypnotic success from Seeroy, whose future tracks we’re certainly anticipating. — This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.

London-based artist Rupert Cox consumes on his debut album Search Party, melding elements of folk, jazz, and dance with eclectic appeal. “I wanted the whole process to be guided by a commitment to vulnerability and authenticity, so those are probably the overarching themes,” Cox says.

“The Nowhere Dance” opens the release with an inviting vibrancy. Twinkling keys and a warming bass pulse guide a delightfully effervescent charm, with key-laden flourishes and emerging synth lines excelling in their emergence alongside the steady piano-based backbone. “Fig Tree” follows with a more contemplative piano tone, casting an autumnal spell with the gentle acoustical reflections and jazzy percussive lightness. The second half expands with glistening piano-forward expanses within a backing textural swell.

The album’s opening one-two punch showcases the project’s dynamic abilities, from the opener’s perky brightness to the lounge-friendly contemplation of “Fig Tree.” Multiple highlights are abound, beyond those. “Lament” plays steadily with a quaintly yearning folk appeal, traversing into the absorbing title track; this gem enamors with a melodic, confident vocal drive alongside ruminating bass, as ghostly dream-pop vocal spells invigorate at the one-minute turn. From the gentle jazz contemplation of “Remember This” to the peppy opening track, Search Party is a wonderfully diverse introduction from Rupert Cox.

The third single from Dutch drummer and composer Ruud Voesten, “The Crypto Shuffle” presents an intoxicating jazz styling that swells from concise, brassy bursts into a soaring, swooning embrace in the second half. Get rich quick, easy money, greed, fraud and disappointment.”

A solemn saxophone line builds patiently, culminating in the sharp rhythmic accompaniments of Tijs Klaassen on double bass and Voesten on drums. Koen Schalkwijk’s caressing piano infusions play as a quick, lush embrace in between the brassy correspondences, propelled by Mo van der Does (alto sax) and Wietse Voermans (tenor sax). “The Crypto Shuffle” is a stylish, climactic sound with a poignant theme, reflecting “the luring and inviting aspects of money and the destruction it leaves behind.”

First catching our ears with the excellent track “Cold” last year, Martha Eve compels further on the track “Pale Faced Moon.” The South East London-based artist casts a laid-back spell with this newest one, propelled initially by balmy acoustics and twinkling keys alongside the artist’s ethereal vocal entrancement.

“Do you feel like you’re lost? Are you scared to be forgot?” the vocals resonate during the heart-tugging chorus, expressing how lofty and tumultuous the world can feel, especially from the tranquility and familiar peace of a bedroom. The dreamy verses guide seamlessly into the serene charms of the chorus, with the second half expanding with vibrancy as strings emerge. The gorgeous vocal refrain here — “do you want to go?” — proves spellbinding amidst the gentle acoustics. “Pale Faced Moon” is another stunner from Martha Eve.

Martha Eve shares the following about the track:

“Have you ever felt so lonely that you just wanted to disappear? Pale faced moon is a reminder that we are all just little ‘specks’ pondering around the earth, with our own problems, our own worries. Trying to figure out this thing called life. The world seems so big out there sometimes, yet you can still feel so lonely. Written during lockdown in my second-year uni room, I wanted to remind myself that it’s okay to feel lonely. Although life throws things at you at the most unexpected times, you still have control of your mind and you can go away for a moment if you like. I hope this song takes you somewhere nice.”
