Finding Music Worth Finding

Obscure Sound is an independent music publication dedicated to surfacing quality artists — especially the ones you haven't discovered yet.

My name is Mike Mineo, and I started Obscure Sound in February 2006 out of a love for discovering under-exposed music and sharing it with others. Before launching the site, I wrote for PopMatters and Stylus Magazine, and that early experience covering music seriously shaped what OS was always meant to be: a place where editorial taste matters more than hype cycles or trends.

Over two decades later, that mission hasn't changed. We cover indie rock, dream pop, folk, electronic, hip-hop, and everything in between — with a consistent preference for emerging and under-the-radar artists. The site features daily track write-ups, album reviews, interviews, and curated Spotify playlists.

"Obscure Sound gathers hard-to-find songs for listeners to download directly."
— Jon Pareles, The New York Times

Obscure Sound's end-of-year lists have been aggregated by Metacritic, and the site has been featured in the New York Times, The Guardian, Boston Globe, Wired, BBC Radio 1, New York Magazine, The Independent, The Observer, The Toronto Star, and VH1. In 2012, CD Baby named OS one of the Top 100 Must-Follow Music Resources on Twitter. In 2013, Refinery29 included OS on its list of "The Best Music Blogs That Aren't Pitchfork." When NME printed its final issue in 2018, Descrier listed OS among the publications recommended to fill the gap.

Alongside the editorial work, I provide Music PR Services for artists looking to build press momentum. With two decades of relationships in the blogosphere and industry, I've helped earn artists features in NME, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Earmilk, and beyond — in addition to sync placements, label deals, and Spotify editorial pickups.
