Franz – “Janis”

Franz is the DIY multi-media project of Stephanie Schubert, who writes, produces, and records all of her songs, and directs/edits her music videos. It’s a fully engrossing audio/visual project with considerable atmospheric charm and textural expansion. “Janis”, the second original track from the project, exemplifies this. A playful bass line and ’80s-tinged minimal percussion open things over reverb-laden vocals, complemented by a ghostly croon effect at the end of each verse. The melodic soundscape remains minimalist and hypnotic throughout, with little variation beyond the rhythmic increase at the four-minute mark. It makes for a consuming, hypnotic result.
