Volunteer Cheerleader – “The City Is A Bone”

Volunteer Cheerleader is a very melodic and hook-y project formed by two grade school friends, who re-connected in NYC after some time apart. “The City Is A Bone” is a fantastic effort, the project’s first single and one that shows their approach as enjoyably in the realm of hook-y power-pop, one filled with warm synth lines and vocal harmonies. The primary hook (00:47), initiated by phrasing of the track title, doesn’t depart significantly from the preceding verses — though just enough to make an impression. The guitar tones remind a bit of The Psychedelic Furs’ brighter efforts (“Pretty in Pink”), while the lush synths in the back lend a more contemporaneous indie-pop charm. Timeless rock/pop elements of the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s seem to converge on this project’s impressive, contagious sound.

Look out for the duo’s debut EP, to be released in the near future.
