Evelyn Drach – “Never Let Me Go”

One of the most striking music videos I’ve seen this year, “Never Let Me Go” is a memorable new release from Evelyn Drach, whose vein of dark, avant-garde pop is accompanied by exotic visual pulsations and haunting dance within the video. The whirring, minimalist verses lead to an expansive chorus, where the track’s title is repeated over various vocal layers and evolving percussion.

Drach’s impressive sound is culled from her many pursuits in life, ranging from spending “months living in a mud hut in the heart of the Amazon jungle, a year exploring abandoned houses in rural France and years working as a house clearer sorting through the possessions of those who have passed on.”

Her background in fine art and dance is on full display here, as are her stimulating experimental musical tendencies. In 2018 Drach finished recording her debut album, which combines ten years of writing, sound recordings and experimentation. She is releasing this track-by-track on Spotify and plans to release the full album on vinyl in 2019.

If you enjoy this one, you’re also likely to enjoy the video for Drach’s “The Beast”, released earlier this summer:

“Never Let Me Go” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2018’ Spotify playlist.
