Joy Downer – “Getaway Car”

“Getaway Car” is a memorable new track from Los Angeles artist Joy Downer, following up last year’s successful single “Plastic Wrap.” The track develops enjoyably from nonchalant lushness into a memorably hooky pop sound, with some nice rock-forward guitar work in between. Lush synths to guitar-rock and then to a very memorable hook — with each transition working without fault. This aforementioned memorable hook, occurring around 01:50, injects an effervescent synth-laden pop feel with yearning clarity. The vocals assume a slight quiver, accompanied by reflective backing vocal effects, and help assemble a moment that produces replay value in its own right. Of course, the lush beginnings and climatic bass-laden build tempt revisits as well. “Getaway Car” is a track abound with enjoyable stylistic navigation and replay-worthy melodic hooks.

“Getaway Car” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2019’ Spotify playlist.
