Reid Johnson fronts the project Sun Studies, a songwriting vehicle for his striking baritone voice and haunting songwriting. Johnson has built up a strong catalog with Raleigh, NC band Schooner since the mid-2000s. His Sun Studies project was announced in conjunction with North Carolina’s 2018 Hopscotch Music Festival. Sun Studies is folk music at its heart, also hearkening to avant-garde pop and folk of yesteryear, when types like Roy Orbison and Scott Walker captivated with fiercely distinctive vocal deliveries and a daring creative spirit. “Which Wave?” opens the project’s new album Sketches, which is streaming in full below.
