What About Sylvia – “Lucky You” + “Flower”

/

Southern California-based duo What About Sylvia impress throughout new EP Lucky You. The release’s self-titled track is particularly effective, with Krista Blairand’s melodic vocal presence lending a climactic feel alongside churning guitars, synth flourishes, and bird chirps. The hook around 01:03 sees more clarity in the vocal mix, with soaring guitar additions adding wonderfully as the two-minute mark approaches. The vocal presence and successful melodic build-up reminds of Mitski. Another highlight from the EP is closer “Flower,” a serene success that sounds fit for rainy spring days in its first half, before a more anthemic second half turn with rising vocals and swelling instrumentation. Both these successes offer a great look into this emerging act’s captivating sound.

“”Lucky You” is a song born from a complex meeting of solemn and quiet nature lyrics with music and rhythmic pulses that contrast in their being strong and energetic and it all culminates in a bridge and final chorus that feel like an emotional shout or outburst from pressure that built up,” the act says.
