Vanessa Carrión Upson De Harper – “The Thrush”

/

Touting a striking vocal presence and experimental spirit reminiscent of Kate Bush, “The Thrush” is a successfully idiosyncratic track from Vanessa Carrión Upson De Harper. The track marks the first release of the artist’s song cycle, Siete Bocas, exploring “themes of remembrance and love after death.” The Brooklyn-based artist impresses with a wide range of sounds here — with the stirring, orchestral-forward conclusion also reminding of Björk. The “I’ll be coming back for you,” section after the one-minute mark — with creeping, somber strings — is another striking, memorable moment. The track impresses with its aesthetic and constantly moving song structure. I’ll be anticipating more from this song cycle.

“The Thrush” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2019’ Spotify playlist.
