Rainer Landfermann – “Intuition”

Rainer Landfermann crafts eclectic avant-garde metal, finding no difficulty in alternating between moments of delicate beauty and intensely affecting screams. Off the German artist’s diverse solo album Mein Wort in Deiner Dunkelheit, “Intuition” is a sprawling 5-minute effort that exemplifies the artist’s wide-reaching stylistic range and knack for all-out audible passion. “Intuition” starts with clanging piano and bass, with vocal growling emerging after a haunting choir effect, around the 40-second mark. A cathedral-set organ past the one-minute does further work in contrasting the screaming vocals to follow. This particular organ-set melody is delightfully entrancing, making the vocal-fury transition that more unsettling and oddly effective.
