jelly the astronaut – “Nothing Better”

/

Touting a murky soundscape with catching visions of post-punk and darkwave, “Nothing Better” is a new track from jelly the astronaut. The mysterious solo project, based in Milan, shows a thoroughly engrossing sound with this track and “Halfway Happy.” Immediately, pulsing post-punk percussion and a ruminating bass-y murkiness sit behind a hauntingly illuminated synth tone. Additions in the second half are invigorating, like the rising intensity of a backing vocal sample around 01:28 alongside a dramatic synth shimmer. Analog synthesizers, hypnotic percussion, and climactic obscured vocal samples converge for a haunting, resonating sound on “Nothing Better.” Similarly, “Halfway Happy” succeeds with its atmosphere, though touting a more enveloping nocturnal vibe inspired by the TV series Stranger Things.

“Nothing Better” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2020’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Electronic.
