Todd – “Dark Thoughts” + “Moonlight”

Previously impressing with the twangy, nostalgic project Moony Matelot, Todd marks a new entry for talented songwriter Todd Goings. The project released an album and EP in the past month, covering different styles. Paint On Canvas Sound On Silence is described as “little acoustic home demos,” while Dark Thoughts About A Pretty Flower is a 3-song EP in the electronic vein.

“Dark Thoughts” opens the electronic-minded EP, presenting a dramatic haze of an undercurrent, with gradual additions of plucky guitars and eerie psych-friendly components (like the whirring at 02:25). Presenting an apt opener to an atmospheric release, “Dark Thoughts” impresses and immerses. “Moonlight” is nicely exemplary of the acoustic-forward album. Flickering guitars and distant vocals assemble a campfire-like setting, with the “moonlight,” repetition past the one-minute mark playing with sweet satisfaction. Both these releases will win over listeners with their own unique fervor and stylistic showing.

“Dark Thoughts” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2020’ Soundcloud playlist.
