1996 – “Around You”

/

The lushly entrancing “Around You” is a newly released track from 1996, a new project by Mike Lee, formerly of Letting Up Despite Great Faults and Fanclub. “Around You” features the serene vocals of Lauren Massa, from Houston-based band Velveteen Echo. A hazy dream-pop aesthetic is apparent throughout, with dreamy and clanking guitar tones lending a hypnotic feel. Both the project’s title and aesthetic concoct a nostalgic yearning, brimming with a sense of optimism in the relaxed vocals and perky rhythm section. Lines like “Is there more or are we just friends?” add further to the throwback feeling, one that renders a sense of comfort.

Every song from the project “will feature a different artist from a different city, in hopes to make that literal connection remind us of that first time we ever really felt connected to anything.”

“Around You” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2020’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Dream-Pop.
