Mermaid in China – “Spirit”

/

“Spirit” maintains dreamy qualities while staying brisk in its rhythm and vocal flow. The track is a consuming new release from Mermaid in China, a band from Portland, OR. Lively acoustical strums and spry vocals build past the one-minute mark. The vocals subside amidst a series of gratifying effects rounding 01:30, with lingering guitar tones and synth-laden adornments adding enjoyably to the driving melody. The track’s inspirations — ’80s new-wave pop and “{psychedelic wall of sound vibes” — certainly ring true. “Spirit” is a fully engaging success from Mermaid in China.

The band elaborate more on the track below:

“Initially inspired by the loss of a loved one, the song reveals a narrator processing the painful thoughts/feelings that can occur while grieving. Lyrics center on themes of despair, cynicism, and depression, with references to self talk, ego, human evolution, neurology, meditation, anxiety, the cosmos, the human condition, and substance abuse.”

“Spirit” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2020’ Spotify playlist.
