Dan Friese is a folk songwriter from Oregon, whose new album Jane Songs shows an intimate yet melodic vein of alternative folk that hooks. Album track “Start Breathing In” touts a soaring, consuming sound with a reverberating vocal presence. Soft acoustics and harmonica comprise an inviting intro. Suave vocals emerge after the percussion picks up, with the guitars emitting a vibrant feel that plays well against the vocal nonchalance. “This whole damn world has gone insane,” Friese sings, “we gauge our worth on what we’ve gained.” The ensuing “start breathing in,” hook succeeds, fully.
