The debut single from singer/songwriter Chris Portka, “A Candle is a Raging Fire!” shows well throughout, crafting a patient yet rewarding feel steeped in warming components of rock and Americana, with commendable electronic flourishes. “A Candle is a Raging Fire!” touts an initially slow-burning churn, set alongside the entrenched title-referencing refrain. Dreamy components emerge past the two-minute mark, with the flickering organ in particular. Wandering guitar tones past four-minute mark play engagingly alongside synth-laden fragments. The final minute sees the refrain assuming an anthemic, stirring feel as the organs and guitar wind into the satisfying conclusion.
Portka notes that the track is personal. “[“A Candle is a Raging Fire!”] reflects the long, multi-decade struggle I’ve had with music,” Portka says. “My parents were never supportive of my musical ambitions and actively discouraged me from pursuing music as a career. So I’ve struggled to make my way through jobs in the tech world – all while keeping the hope alive that someday I’d become a musician.”
