Adjective Animal – “Everybody Hide”

/

A recent track from Adjective Animal, the solo project of Jon Birkholz, “Everybody Hide” allures with a melodic vocal lead and hazy guitars. Its chorus — “hide in your hobbies,” — reflects the track’s theme of succumbing to society’s pressures. Quaint, breezy verses build nicely to this point, with Birkholz’ vocals gliding seamlessly into a guitar-based reprieve around 01:20. The Baltimore-based act impresses throughout the track, in addition to throughout new album America’s Got Talons, described as “a breakup album, written partly during the confusion leading up to the end of the relationship and partly afterward.”

Birkholz says the following about the track:

“The song is about what happens when we succumb to pressures to fulfill the roles presented to us by society. The idea sprang from a mushroom trip following a breakup, my friends and I were talking about the ways that ‘success’ can cause people to hide from what they are trying to do. In a lot of ways, consumerism and peer pressure work together to create an environment where it is more comfortable to sink into a prescribed role.”

“Everybody Hide” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of January 2021’ Spotify playlist.
