Hexcellent – “Smile”

San Francisco-based dup Hexcellent show ample mood and suaveness throughout “Smile.” Infusing elements of pop, rock, and funk, the track touts a smoky, inviting quality with ’80s nostalgia. The bass line, with components of funk and disco, interacts melodically with swanky guitars and piano. The “what goes up,” verses, approaching the two-minute mark, cast a mysteriously engrossing spell; the suave bass line escalates alongside confident vocals upon the ensuing percussive push. The “everybody, everybody, watch me smilin’,” hook grips firmly. “Smile” contains an abundance of catching moments and an alluring vibe throughout, a thorough success from Hexcellent.

“Smile” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of February 2021’ Spotify playlist.
