Vipid – “Night Tides”

/

Memories is a wintry, ambient album from Vipid, the Burbank-based project of Jared Simmons. “Night Tides” shows its chilly, nocturnal aesthetic with trickling guitars and a steady rhythm section, conjuring an immersive feel reminiscent of artists like Tycho and Boards of Canada. Background crackling and guitar work round the two-minute mark, with textural growth occurring thereafter in satisfying form. Other highlights include the spacious, effervescent “Dawn” and consuming key/guitar interplay within “Six.”

Memories is an album that draws inspiration from early points in my life,” Simmons says. “As you look back on memories and recall the way life used to be, it’s often informed by all the things you’ve learned since then. Memories really was a way for me to channel those experiences and see them in a new light.”
