Fellwalker – “Seriously Though”

Leading with a cinematic pop mystique and rhythms in the jazzy trip-hop vein (complements of The Bad Plus drummer Dave King), “Seriously Though” is a moody new track from Fellwalker, the Philadelphia-based duo comprising Cynthia Hopkins and James Lavino. In the midst of rainy-day piano and percussion, lyrics reflect prevailing over adversity with a passionate pull — “I’m swooping in to rescue myself, I am my own savior / Don’t need no one else, don’t need no knight in shining armor.” This particular section shows a savvy trip-hop feeling, eventually giving way seamlessly into the initial piano-forward moodiness. The passionate chorus — “I’m gonna let ‘em unfurl,” — is another highlight throughout. “Seriously Though” is a consuming success from Fellwalker.

“Seriously Though” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2021’ Spotify playlist.
