Painted Flowers – “Late Night Special”

/

Strutting a funky rock sound with a nocturnal spirit, the aptly named “Late Night Special” is a new track from South Africa-based band Painted Flowers. The six-piece are reputed for their energetic and stylish live performances, and “Late Night Special” channels that creative energy within the studio. Playful synth tones are quickly accompanied by guitar spurts and a funky bass line, tonally reminiscent of Scary Monsters-era Bowie. “The city’s much prettier with you in it,” the vocals lead, the “knock at the door,” clap-laden bridge playing with ample momentum. The “gotta get down tonight,” hook plays with satiating charm upon each reprisal. Painted Flowers certainly impress with the confident “Late Night Special.”

The band elaborate more on the track below:

“For the new EP we wanted to go explore a darker, more funk influenced side of the 70’s. Late Night Special was the first song that came out of the writing and recording process and it’s the one that most encompasses the new sound we’re grooving with at the moment. Instead of head banging we wanted people to dust off their dancing heels and get on down, wag your tail and dance 1970s’ New York Style. It’s a song for that night time drive to the boogie, brimming with attitude and flavour.”

“Late Night Special” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2021’ Spotify playlist.
