Sea Driver – “Hook Or By Crook”

//

Sea Driver‘s “Hook Or By Crook” is a riveting rocker with a raucously captivating vocal lead and gripping guitar-based turns. The Kent, UK-based quartet conjure a fervent rock sound reminiscent of The Pixies. Alongside lyrics lamenting about the UK’s political climate, “Hook Or By Crook” grabs firmly from the get-go.

Clamoring percussion and guitar-based feedback steadily adjust alongside a bustling bass line, with post-punk intentions. The guitar lines swell with vigor gradually, as the vocals unleash a sweltering sense of tonal dissatisfaction. The bass-heavy post-punk fervency re-emerges as the vocals fade, building powerfully throughout the second half into twinkling guitar additions alongside the pulsing rhythmic backbone. The final 20 seconds is wholly captivating, with surf-y backing vocals alongside the exciting lead.

“The single was originally in a different form and through the pandemic was rewritten and given a new lease of life to better reflect our sound,” the band says. “‘Hook Or By Crook’ is about the mishandling of the PPE contracts and lack of honesty and integrity within the government in charge.”

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2022’ Spotify playlist.
