Step into the Kitchen – ‘Soups and Starters’

The hypnotic, grooving Soups and Starters is an enthralling EP from Step into the Kitchen, a band from Portland, OR. A psychedelic fervency surrounds brassy soul and haunting guitar jangles throughout the release, accompanied by ghostly vocal effects on “Pan or Grittle” and a saxophone-led vibrancy through “Thicken and Set.”

All four EP tracks enamor with creative, psych-friendly delights. “Thicken and Set” is especially memorable in its bright, bouncy lushness. The brassy blaring and ’60s key-laden swaying complements serene vocal touches for a wholly intoxicating production; it’s the type of track you can have on repeat, and not mind at all, for many hours. “Pan or Grittle” touts a more dub-friendly charm with its suave brass and bass line, continuing cohesively into the unsettling beauty within the finale “A Long Peak at the Script.”
