David McKinney – ‘Phaneron’ EP

The second solo album from Oklahoma-based singer/songwriter David McKinney, Phaneron enamors with its meshing of folk and rock, ranging from traditional folk efforts to the unique stylings of “Gyri” and sweltering bluesy rock of “Through.”

“Gyri” is an intriguing and gripping expansion on the EP’s folk-forward sound, achieved successfully though more traditionally with opening tracks “Phaneron” and “The Source.” The tranquil bass, ukulele swaying, and reverbed snare on “Gyri” complement laid-back vocals, reminiscent aesthetically of Jens Lekman. There’s a vocal-like sound effect, appearing at points like 01:30, that adds a yearning melodic pull.

The suave rocker “Through” mixes confessional adoration — “gotta thank the lord for just making you,” — with bluesy guitar howls and a steady rhythmic pulsing. It’s another highlight on the EP, which boasts consuming songwriting and eclectic fervency throughout.
