A dreamy mystique compels throughout “Future Memories,” the new track from Philadelphia-based artist James the Seventh. Gentle pianos develop into a twangy guitar-based accompaniment, alongside entrancing vocals that assemble a production reminiscent of Mazzy Star. “These future memories,” her vocals rise, exuding a sweltering charm with ’90s alt-rock nostalgia. Aesthetically, the track charms somewhere between that particular nostalgia and more contemporary pop successes like Billie Eilish, Lana del Rey, and BANKS.

The track’s emotive vocal performances is striking throughout, accompanied by lyrics that reflect a personal struggle. Formerly a pre-professional ballet dancer, James the Seventh chronicles past struggles with an eating disorder, and the strength and newfound optimism she carries in looking toward a brighter future.

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2022’ Spotify playlist.
