Interview with Lauren G

We chat with Lauren G, the New Haven, CT native recently featured with the track “Main Focus,” which touts a nocturnal R&B pull throughout,

Your new single “Main Focus” struts a consuming, atmospheric vein of R&B, to me lyrically capturing the tumult of concurrent relationships. What is the thematic focus and/or inspirations behind the track?

That is exactly the inspiration. At the time I wrote this about a guy I was messing with. He made it seem like he was single and free to do what he wants. All the while, he had one main girl and another side girl he was going back and forth with. He was pretty much living off both of them. I’d soon find out he was taking their money and spending it on girls he was trying to sleep with for the night.

Your musical performing began at age 3, when you started classical violin. When and how did you realize that your passion was in R&B singing/songwriting?

Violin was something I was more forced into doing. I realized I love singing in 4th or 5th grade. Destiny’s child and Christina Aguilera were the first that made me love singing RnB and pop. This was also the time I realized I had a great ability to memorize songs. I started to write poetry in 6th grade and by high school they molded together into songwriting

The “Main Focus” music video adds well to the sound’s soundscape, capturing a sense of yearning through apartments and nighttime city sights. What was the experience like, creating the video?

The experience was amazing creating the video, but definitely very tiring. We did it all in one day, moving to multiple locations and I had a lot of fun!

Do you have any recommendations, music or otherwise, for first-time visitors to the New Haven, CT area?

I would definitely say check out Lauren G music! There are a lot of other great shows in New Haven though, as well as restaurants and bars.

Do you have a specific process or ritual when creating new music?

I actually don’t have a specific process or ritual. Every song is different. Sometimes I come up with the hook first, sometimes I come up with the verse first. Other times I come up with the melody first, other times I come up with the lyrics first.

Any favorite artists or albums you’re listening to at the moment?

I’m loving Doja Cat especially right now. I love her voice, versatility and variation in what she does.

If you could collaborate with any artist, alive or dead, who would it be?

Definitely the singer songwriter HER.

What do you find is the most satisfying part of being an artist?

Being on stage, I love the feeling I get. When I sing or record my own songs, I get to express myself while at the same time influencing people.

What is the biggest challenge you find in today’s music industry?

Definitely making money digitally as well as getting constant shows.

What’s upcoming for the project?

I am making new music all the time.
