jRadx – ‘Desert Power’

//

Following a prolific 2021 that produced three albums, Coquitlam, BC-based artist and producer jRadx continues his creative vigor throughout new album Desert Power. The release’s eclectic sound deals in electronic, dance, hip-hop, and all-out experimentation, resulting in an ambitious approach that succeeds in its thought-provoking intensity.

The rapping throughout the release plays with a quaint effectiveness. “Strife” stands out in such a way, entrancing with its piano-forward beat and soulful vocal samples. The second half entry of the hip-hop verses reminds fondly of a looser Aesop Rock. “Maybe” utilizes the hip-hop delivery amidst more nocturnal synths and industrial tones, fit for a Halloween night stroll.

Truly a fit for autumnal chills, Desert Power consumes with its grimy construction of atmospheric beats and hip-hop interludes, also intriguing with the otherworldly hypnosis of “Hypertribe” and gently eerie chills of “Hellscape.”
