Forest Circles – ‘Doorway Cutter’ EP

///

Doorway Cutter is a stirring new EP from Forest Circles, the solo project of Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Angel Ocana. The release deals a heavy, emotive rock sound that spans from the distortion-heavy bustle of “Choke” to the orchestral-laden grandiosity of the closing “Medicine Man.”

Following the steadily building and menacing rock vigor of the opening “Red Moon,” “Choke” opens with thunderous energy. Ceaseless guitar distortion and steady percussion complement an angsty vocal presence, whose tonal delivery reminds fondly of Placebo’s Brian Molko. A guitar-driven emphasis approaching the two-minute turn adds further vigor to the invigorating sound, as does the uptick in vocal passion in the conclusion.

The EP’s title track stands out especially for its dynamic structural escalation, highlighting the project’s eclectic influences. The initially understated guitars and solemn vocals conjure nostalgic grunge and alt-rock visions, while the “watch the canvas burn,” vocal rise stirs with its passionate unveiling. The second-half swell, with added keys and vocal passion, represents another memorable moment on this stellar EP.
