Illuminade – “Spoonflower”

The eerie and atmospheric “Spoonflower” is the latest single from Houston-based artist Illuminade, who has released a track every month over the past year. Twinkling keys and subtle backing whirs develop into an engaging rhythm section, with a playful bass pulse and steady percussion. Intermingling keys make for a thoroughly hypnotic effect, with added organ-like prancing — past the two-minute turn specifically — adding to the ghostly and captivating character.

The project is that of Elijah Reed, whose darkly gripping music takes inspiration from acts like Portishead, Flying Lotus, The Weeknd, and The Mars Volta. His fusing of psychedelic rock and electronic pop makes for a riveting sound that balances melodic appeal with atmospheric intrigue, wholly succeeding on the immersive “Spoonflower.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of January 2023’ Spotify playlist.
