The Northern Light – “As Stars Burn”

“As Stars Burn” is a rousing new single from The Northern Light, a Seattle-based trio. David Pollon’s songwriting impresses throughout, escalating from jangly mystique into a commanding rock ferocity. The opening lines — “on top of the world,” — consume amidst the trickling guitars, capturing the simultaneous excitement and unease within a new relationship.

The culminating, title-touting chorus engages with a chilling, forlorn quality — especially with the punctuating “the light in your eyes is like staring into the sun.” Icy guitar tones and a bustling, reflective bass drive into a soaring guitar solo thereafter, electrifying with its soaring excitement into a final title-bearing reprisal. “As Stars Burn” impresses with its melodic escalation and confident vocal presence, marking another success from the act.

The band elaborate on the track:

“As Stars Burn explores the intense feelings of a new relationship. As we fall into the orbit of a new passion the sense of giving yourself away comes with a feeling of loss of control. Rational thought cannot escape the intensity of joy, fear, pain and exhilaration.”
