Porteau – “Chasing Celadon”

/

“Chasing Celadon” is a striking single from Porteau, the Vancouver-base duo of Victoria Williams and Craig Stevenson. Lyrics resonate in showing adoration for someone who has passed — “I’ve been leaving your broach on my bedside, wondering if you know what you left behind,” — amidst lush guitar trickles and a subtle percussive pit-pattering. “Come back to me,” the vocals plead with emotive range, yearning for a comforting past presence. The “take what I can get,” concluding refrain emits a gorgeously impactful sound with the interweaving vocals and frolicking acoustics.

“Chasing Celadon” is a moving success from the rising duo, who will be releasing more singles and a full-length album in the coming months.

Williams elaborates on the track:

“The song is written from a place of connection between me and my late grandmother, who passed away when I was four. On the night of her passing, my family swore that my eyes turned the same shade of green as hers. As the years passed, familial trauma buried the bond we shared. Chasing Celadon is an exploration of this relationship and a declaration of my love for her.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2023’ Spotify playlist.
