The Spiritual Leaders are a three-piece electronic indie collective from Cavan, Ireland. They give off New Order vibes on the regular, with touches of Yo La Tengo and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Exuding more of a Brit-pop sound á la Ride or Suede, “Past Present Future” is more guitar-centric than their previous singles “Shadows & Tall Trees,” “Hall of Mirrors,” and “The Last Sunset,” all of which will be on the band’s forthcoming LP, This Fictional Place, releasing on March 24th.

Taken together, these songs give a stronger electronic impression than was present on their first album (The Spiritual Leaders in 2012), which more closely resembled The Cure and James. This is extremely rich soil for exploratory songwriting and atmospheric soundscapes that present a nostalgic quirkiness resembling early 1990s indie-pop.

“Come visit me in my dreams sometime.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2023’ Spotify playlist.
